Cycling through history

New collaboration announced between Tohu Whenua and Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand.

Tohu Whenua is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand, the organisation behind the 23 world-class Great Rides.

Showcasing some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most amazing landscapes, culture and heritage, food and wine and accommodation, the Great Rides are an exciting and environmentally sustainable way to reach must-see sights and activities.

Tohu Whenua is a programme that connects New Zealanders and international visitors with Aotearoa New Zealand’s cultural heritage by promoting places of historical significance that offer high quality visitor experiences.

Recognising a natural fit

New Zealand Cycle Trails (NZCT) is the overarching body that looks after the 23 Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand. Its chief executive Janet Purdey says the collaboration is a perfect fit.

“A number of our trails pass through or near Tohu Whenua sites, which combine culture and heritage with beautiful natural settings, so we align nicely.”

An example is the Otago Central Rail Trail Great Ride, which is also a Tohu Whenua site. Tohu Whenua site Māngungu Mission in the Hokianga (pictured in header) is the start or end point for the beautiful Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail Great Ride, which weaves past Kororipo Heritage Park, with easy detours to Waitangi Treaty Grounds and Pompallier Mission.

Caroline Toplis, Kaiwhakahaere Hōtaka Programme Manager for Tohu Whenua, says, “We look forward to making these connections to enhance visitor experiences, boost regional storytelling and support sustainable community growth across Aotearoa.”

Purdey adds, “We can’t wait to explore and pursue opportunities with Toha Whenua that will benefit both our domestic and international visitors alike.”
