Pūtaringamotu Riccarton House and Bush
Start by exploring Pūtaringamotu Riccarton Bush's 600-year-old trees and lush native forest, via the flat accessible boardwalks which have just been upgraded. There’s a café at Riccarton House and a great farmers’ market on Saturday mornings to enjoy.
Awaroa Godley Head
Out towards the coast, this extensive coastal defence system was built during World War II and is now accessible for explorers of all ages. Hit the Awaroa Godley Head Loop track for breathtaking views. Kids will have a blast venturing into the underground magazines and gun emplacements.
Historic Ōamaru
Heading south to Ōamaru, explore countless quirky galleries and artisan shops, a world-class bakery, cafés, and a boutique brewery – a reward for the parents – on this perfectly intact Victorian street - and don’t miss Whitestone City, where you can touch and try everything - it brings history to life for young and old alike.
Totara Estate
Just down the highway from the Ōamaru town centre is Totara Estate the home of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first ever meat export. Get hands on feeding the lambs, and exploring the stables, granary, cookhouse and slaughterhouse freely – listen out for the colourful stories and finish with a belly full of traditional country baking and tea.
Te Kopikopiko o Te Waka
You and your kids will discover the celestial story of how the South Island came to be according to mana whenua, Ngāti Mahaki, all while climbing this stunning interactive waka sculpture. Incredible views of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana the Southern Alps and Te Weheka Fox Glacier will make your visit unforgettable.
